Blighty gets the Boot

Dahlings how are we all?  It's a bit soggy round these parts, and also the snow is melting...

Today is, as usual, not going to plan.

Boys 1 and 2, who in some ways resemble Thompson and Thomson from Tintin, have had another "incident":

When Boy 1 went to put his snow boots on this morning,  he discovered that Boy 2 had gone off to school wearing Boy 1's bigger boots (stay with me, it's complicated but so worth it).  Judging by the yells and oaths and muttered threats, I think perhaps Boy 2 should not come home this evening, I had better arrange for a "safe house" for him somewhere..

I have my own boot related woes.  My beloved Ugg boots which I have been wearing non-stop in the house as slippers since buying them under the expert supervision of Lovely B at Bicester Village last Sept, have sprung a hole.  How's that for a First World Problem?  Is there some sort of support group I could contact?

The good news is that I seem to have got my reading mojo back (ha! I just mistyped that as mofo, which is quite different).  There was an interesting article by David Nicholls (who wrote "One Day") in the Telegraph recently about finding time to read; coincidentally Boy 1's English teacher made them read it for homework. You can find it here It definitely rang a chord with me, particularly about repeatedly checking into the same websites...


Currently I am reading this.


Must admit, was a bit daunted what with it being so long and a Booker Prize winner and all, but it's very readable, wonderfully written and the author has made old Thomas Cromwell into a likeable character, which makes a change from all those films and plays where he is evil and calculating and, even worse, a lawyer

I have been putting books I have read on my Pinterest if anyone is interested.


Better go now, have to hire an armoured car to collect Boy 2 in from school tonight..

    Another fab post Blighty! Hope that Boy 2 is in a safe house... Those uggs look just the thing for this weather. Wonder if I could wear them in the office at work? Have been tempted to bring in my duvet but I think that might be taking it too far!

    I haven't read Wolf Hall yet, but am rereading The Historian, which is great.

    Will check out your Pinterest! Haven't joined that yet, but it seems to be addictive among my friends!

    Living in Shanghai I have never been so cold as I was when in England. "Gets-into-your-bones" cold (and I have learned to say that in chinese). The point is, sheepskin is the best! One of life's (winter) necessities. I feel your pain.

    I am reading the complete Mary Stewart oeuvre. Started with all the ones set in lovely warm holiday locations.

      I do not know Mary Stewart - is she Greek mythology?? will google, like the sound of warm locations.Friends of ours lived in Shanghai for a few years..do I know you???

      Sorry for the late reply. No you don't know me. But you must know Shanghai winters, so deadly. I have escaped to my native Vancouver for "spring festival". Mary Stewart in the late 1950s and 1960s published travel "adventure-romance". The "Moonspinners" was adapted by Disney. With a horrible flu in freezing Shanghai it was the escapism I craved - and I marvelled at how travel has changed. Maybe the '60s was "slow travel".

    maybe a makeover would be in order. No, not boy 2, he can look after himself. I mean the Uggs. A bit of blutack and one of those little plugs you can get to individualize your Crocs. Problem solved.

      yes I really feel I need to get creative with superglue and bits of leather - once Boy 2 is fixed, I shall turn to the Ugg boot problem..

    Yes Thomas Cromwell all sweetness and light in Wolf Hall, but you wait until Bring up the Bodies, his true evilness is revealed!
    Oh dear, keep strong the thought of living with the characters from a TinTin book is enough to make me think I need a soothing drink.

      Dear Claire, how fascinating about Cromwell in Bring up the Bodies, I was completely taken in by the sympathetic portrait of him in Wolf Hall..can't wait to read the next book now. Yes, sometimes I feel I am living in a Tintin book, I think Mr B is Prof Calculus, I vary between Captain Haddock and Bianca Castafiore..

    Dear Mrs Blighty, The David Nicholls article resonated with me too! I too have precariously high stacks of unread or partially read books. I keep putting them down because something (paperwork, ironing, creeping dementia - where was I?) intervenes. As an example, I started Wolf Hall, thought it very good but put it down somewhere a few months ago and now it is enjoying an all expenses cruise back to Australia. There is something disheartening as well about rereading the same page/chapter because one has fallen asleep and forgotten where one was. However, I am resolved to change! Turning to the Ugg boot problem, clearly a First World solution is required: Return to BV with the Lovely B and purchase a new pair! love Lindaxxx

      Dear Linda, I feel terribly nostalgic for when you were Linda in Chile, I just don't cope well with change!!! I think the trick with books is to plough on even if one skim reads a bit, one needs to keep the momentum going..that's my excuse anyway!! I really like your First World Solution - so simple, so elegant...
